Pertubuhan Ukur, Jurutera dan Arkitek (PUJA) Brunei became the host for this year’s ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) Mid-term Meetings, which were conducted at Centerpoint Hotel, Gadong from Tuesday, 30th April 2019 to Thursday, 2nd May, 2019.
On Thursday, the ASEAN Engineering Register (AER) Committee members discussed issues related to memberships, presented update reports for each organization and the activities of the AER members in each country.
Attending the meeting was Pertubuhan Ukur, Jurutera dan Arkitek
(PUJA) Brunei’s Fellow and ASEAN Engineer, Ir. Julian Fung. Ir. Julian stated that “all of the engineers registered under AER Brunei are also PUJA Brunei members. Through PUJA Brunei, our AER engineers have been attending Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses and seminars throughout the months of January to April 2019”.
He further elaborated that these seminars have been focusing on subjects ranging from professional insurances, risk management, to safety standards and other matters involved in the construction industry. “The speakers of these events have been our counterparts from Singapore and Malaysia who are experts on these subjects, and we have invited them to share their knowledge and experience with our Engineers, as well as other professionals from the Brunei Construction Sector”, reported the delegate member. Ir. Julian also welcomed other members of the federation to “come to Brunei to share their knowledge and experiences with our Professionals”, as one of the benefits of AER is to provide a greater avenue for sharing knowledge, expertise and technology.

Also present at the meeting was the Country Registrar of AER Brunei, Dato Paduka Haji Othman bin Haji Yaakub (Fellow Member of PUJA), alongside Haji Mohammad Zin bin Haji Salleh (Vice-President of PUJA and Chairman of the Engineer Division), Ir. Lim Sui Kau Alice (Vice-Chairperson of the Engineer Division and Acting Director General of Public Works Department) and Ir. Chin Lee Tuck (Secretary of the Engineer Division).
The AER was officially formed by the AFEO Board members in October 2001, with the main objectives of promoting ASEAN Engineering within and outside ASEAN, to reinforce cultural and professional links amongst AER members and to foster high standards of professional practice.
The ASEAN Engineering Register also serves to provide the additional benefits of enabling access to a bigger market for expertise, and to provide data regarding individual Engineers, Engineering Technologists and Technicians for the convenience of potential employers within the ASEAN Region.
“I would encourage all Professional Engineers in Brunei Darussalam to join the ASEAN Engineering Register,” Ir. Julian added, “as it can provide wider networking and strategic alliance opportunities with our Regional Counterparts, and our young engineers with opportunities for increased professional mobility within the ASEAN region”.
