The Arbitration Association Brunei Darussalam (AABD), with the support of Pertubuhan Ukur, Jurutera & Arkitek (PUJA) Brunei and other international organisations, became the host of last week’s Regional Arbitral Institutes Forum (RAIF) Conference 2019 on Friday, December 6, 2019.
The event — which took place at The Rizqun International Hotel, Gadong — was officially launched by the the Guest of Honour, Honorable Speaker of the Legislative Council Brunei Darussalam, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib.
Also present was PUJA President Yang Berhormat FDr. Ar. Dayang Siti Rozaimeriyanty binti Dato Seri Laila Jasa Haji Abdul Rahman, as well as PUJA members, local and international guests and participants.

The Conference proceeded with a series of discussions on various topics concerning arbitration: including “How to overcome the problem of Delay in International Arbitration”; “The Singapore Convention and Interplay between Arbitration and Meditation with a focus on Financial and Intellectual Property disputes”; the “Impact of the Belt & Road Initiative on Construction and Commercial Arbitration in the Asia-Pacific”; and the “New trends of challenges made against arbitrators”.
The event also consisted of closing remarks from the Vice-President of AABD, Yang Amat Mulia Pg Indera Negara Pg Anak Hj Puteh Ibni Al Marhum Pg Pemancha Pg Anak Hj Alam; presentation of country reports on their significant developments in international arbitration; as well as a formal meeting for the RAIF Council.
Started in Singapore, in 2007, the Regional Arbitral Institutes Forum is an annual conference; organised as a means for arbitral institutes from the Asia Pacific to come together and explore ways of collaboration.
